Dear Family and Friends,
I vow to never give up on the fight for the demise of cancer. I lost both my parents to cancer. My father in July 2009 and my mother July 2007. This is as close to the fight for a cure as I can get without having it myself.
My father had recently received his first chemotherapy treatment and landed in the hospital the next day. Six days later he passed away. He battled exposure to asbestos, emphysema and lung cancer.
We were extremely close and I am heart broken. I was Blessed to spend a whole week with him and he stated that "it was what he'd always wanted to do." We achieved more in that week than some folks achieve in a lifetime.
It's unfortunate that I didn't get to spend a lot of time with my mom prior to her passing. I sat by helplessly and watched her fight through the side effects of chemotherapy as she battled breast cancer in the early 80's. She was a fighter and a strong survivor.
At that time we didn’t openly communicate or have support groups on this topic. We went on with our busy lives and the closest she came to sharing what was happening to her ( us) were newspaper articles she cut out for me to read. She was an avid reader and relied heavily on passing info on to family and friends this way. I still hold onto these til this day.
Today, thank God, there are support groups and more resources for women to depend on but not every demographic has adequate access to information and treatment and as a result breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women, the second leading cause of cancer death in White women. African American women continue to have higher rates of mortality from breast and cervical cancer. Source
I’m seeking to make a difference with Crusaders for the Cause. Stay tuned for updates on this page.
